Mariah Carey in the mix for 'Idol'

NEW YORK (AP) — "American Idol" may be getting a worldwide idol as a judge — Mariah Carey.
A person familiar with the show's negotiations say Carey is being pursued to join the judging panel of the Fox talent competition. The source requested anonymity because of the private nature of negotiations, which were termed as serious. Carey has also been courted by other talent competitions, and her name has been thrown out in the past for "Idol" and other shows.

President Barack Obama blasted Mitt Romney's economic plan during a stop in the pivotal swing state of Ohio on Monday, saying the blueprint would create 800,000 jobs—just not in America.

Nokia counsels Nigerians to halt purchase of inferior phones

Lagos – Mr Silvin Sinan, the Head of Nokia Care Centre, Nokia West Africa, has advised mobile phone users in Nigeria to desist from purchasing substandard ones.
Sinan in Lagos on Monday said that substandard products had no value for the money spent on them.

He also said that counterfeited product was hazardous to the users’ health due to excessive radiation from the fake device, adding that such product also do not have long life span.

True to tradition, the 2012 Federation Cup has continued to churn out surprise results. The tradition was kept alive at the Agege stadium, Lagos yesterday when a 22nd minute strike by Thompson Ezekiel gave newly promoted National League side, El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri a shock 1-0 victory over Nigeria Premier League side, Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin.

In Ibadan, Premier League table toppers, Rangers International of Enugu fell by the same margin to Prime FC.
It was a result most followers of the local game least expected although El Kanemi worked hard to earn their victory, they also had a touch of luck as Kwara played most of the second half with ten men.

3 killed as soldiers clear Elechi Beach

Three persons, an elderly woman and two girls, died when at least 1,000 residents of Elechi Beach Waterfront, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, were today rendered homeless and properties worth millions of naira destroyed by a Military Joint Taskforce.

The taskforce raided the area in the early hours of today and set the illegal bunkering site ablaze.

Attah of Igala, longest reigning monarch, dies at 102

Lokoja – Dr. Aliyu Ocheja Obaje, Attah of Igala, Nigeria’s longest reigning First Class traditional ruler, is dead, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State announced yesterday.
In the statement by Governor Wada, the Kogi State Government said Dr. Obaje died yesterday at the age of 102.
Obaje, who ascended the throne on November 2, 1956 was the paramount ruler of Igala, the dominant ethnic group in Kogi State and was chairman of Kogi State Traditional Council until

2 Chinese nationals murdered in Nigeria by Chinese

Police authorities in Kano, northwest Nigeria on Monday said they are still investigating the remote and immediate causes of a murder case involving four Chinese nationals at kwanar Ganduje Quarters within the metropolis of the commercial city.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim K. Idirs told reporters that Jimbo Zhao Dang Dong and Smith Zhhang Ze are being detained at the Headquarters of Kano Police Command for killing Xucheng Kun and his friend identified as Old Man during a brawl.

Two suspected fraudsters have been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for defrauding an Australian, Flora A. Veith to the tune of over Twelve Thousand US Dollars, by falsely disclosing to her that the said sum represented part of the delivery cost of the sum of $1, 300,00 USD “Lottery Money” .

The suspected fraudsters, Abiola Ayanlaja who is also known as Elvis Wells and Michael Atirene were arraigned before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on an 18 count charge bordering on conspiracy to obtain money under false pretences contrary to section 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, Cap. A6 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria , 2006.

One the charge reads: “Abiola Ayanlaja (a.ka. Elvis Wells), Michael Atirene and Chidi (a.k.a Emmanuel Nicky) still at large on or about the 19th day of May, 2011 at Ikeja within the Ikeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud conspired to obtain the sum of $6,047.77(Six Thousand Forty Seven United States of America Dollars Seventy-Seven Cents) from Flora A. Veith of Australia by falsely representing to her that the said sum represented part of the delivery cost of the sum of $1,300,00 USD “Lottery Money” which representation you knew to be false.”


When the charges were read to the accused persons, they both pleaded not guilty to all the 18 count charges. The prosecution counsel, Abosede Bosede then prayed the court to give a date for the commencement of trial, assuring that the prosecution is ready with all information and witnesses needed for trial. She also asked the court to remand the two suspects in prison custody.

“In view of the plea of the defendants I will be asking for a trial date and they should be remanded in prison custody.’’ But counsel to the first defendant, M. M Duwa said they have just filed an application for bail. He asked the court to allow for argument on the appllication. However, the EFCC counsel objected to the request. She said the bail application was just served on her in court and will require time to respond to it.

Justice Onigbanjo then fixed July 5th , 2012 for hearing of the bail application and remanded the accused persons in Kirikiri Maximum Prison.

Court jails man for producing 200,000 fake injection valves

AWKA—THE Federal High Court sitting in Awka has sentenced a 42 -year old man, Mr. Peter Otuome to two years imprisonment for illegal production and distribution of fake water for injection.

Otuome, who was arrested by officials of National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, in 2007, was said to have used his house for the production of the counterfeit product and about 200,000 injection valves found during the raid by security operatives were also impounded.
