National U-20 side, the Flying Eagles yesterday failed
to beat a Nigeria Premier League side ABS FC. The friendly match ended in a
goalless draw. It was decided inside the Ilorin Township Stadium.
The Nigeria U-20 team, which used the game as part of build-up for a 2013
African Youth Championship qualifier in
Tanzania later this month, dictated the
pace at the start of the game but failed to win the encounter.
In the 25th minute, a good combination play involving Aminu Umar and Harrison
Egbune released Umar inside the 18-yard box, but the striker fired over the
bar.
ABS responded moments later beating the opponents back four, but finishing
let them down.
Ukraine-based left back Aliyu Mohammed, who was part of the Flying Eagles
Class of 2011, started the match and showed improvement. Sikiru Alimi also came
close for the Flying Eagles in the first half.
The best chance of the entire game came to ABS two minutes after the break
when they cashed in on a rare blunder by defender Ikechukwu Okorie in the heart
of the Flying Eagles defence, but goalkeeper and skipper Samuel Okani blocked
the chance.
